I used to be a sommelier, and in 2017 I got sponsored for a trip around Australia’s wine regions. We bounced around Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne, and got to see some truly beautiful wine regions and taste iconic wines from Barossa Valley, Yarra, Valley, and Mornington Peninsula among others. Yarra valley in particular is one of those gorgeous landscapes that I could see myself retiring in. It adds so much context to what you read in the books. Sydney feels old-world, with its cobbled streets and Irish pubs. Adelaide is really a college town. Barossa Valley has tangible Germanic origins while Yarra Valley feels a little bit hippie-ish. And then in Mornington Peninsula we got our surf on, fully dressed in our black latex gimpsuits—excuse me, wetsuits.
