Emergent Themes

In their own words

If it’s a sound I really enjoy I’ll learn more about the musician, but mainly artists I really enjoy whose messages & themes resonate. The music either inspires or distracts me

Faith draws me closer, it helps me to walk closer in my faith

I’m bipolar with music honestly: I can be bone thugs and harmony one minute then Christian gospel another. Music has a way of speaking how people may be feeling. Music can be therapy so it’s important to be careful what you listen to if your vulnerable.

Two specific things, and then a third that’s more ephemeral and hard to define. First is energy. Strong bass, an interesting beat, maybe some fast-paced power cords on top of that… You need something to keep you moving at the end of the night! Second is connection to memories. Certain bands I associate with my time living in Seattle, certain bands I associate with flying down the highway at 100 miles an hour, certain songs I relate to ex-girlfriends… Music does such a good job at connecting you to memories. The most difficult to explain offering of music is the aesthetic side. Almost like hiking a new mountain and happening upon the beautiful vistas, sometimes something just grabs you and almost seems to appeal to memories that you don’t actually have.

i go to a lot of concerts and observe what music does amongst people, i also use it a ton on social media to accentuate the mood of which i’m trying to portray. some songs are a reminder of people in my life that ive listened with

Nights by Frank Ocea. I spent nights being semi depressed looking at the sky, listening to that song. Sometimes on the lakeshore listening to the waves in freezing winter
